Elite units of the Iraqi Army have penetrated the outskirts of Mossoul. The region has been in the hands of Daesh Jahadists since June 2014. This could be the climax of a hard fought and bloody battle.
One soldier shelters from the rain as the sudden downpour makes advance more difficult. Ali Raed the soldier tries to wipe off the heavy mud from the soles of his boots. He sits in an empty shack which was once a car repair shop. The region is deserted with no-one in sight. The troops, for the time being, hold their ground. No Jahadist to wrestle! Ali is a member of the Special Iraqi Forces who are clad in black. Gorgiali, the gateway to Mossoul, was captured on Tuesday. The troops stop to rest, eat and joke perhaps, before the final battle begins.
