Every year, experts come out with a new “superfood” they swear is supposed to cure all ailments, revitalize our bodies, and change our life. (I know it sounds dramatic, but we’ve all seen the claims.)
So what is 2017’s trendiest superfood? Turns out it’s not something brand-new, but rather, a spice seeped in tradition: turmeric.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with the spice, buckle up. You’re about to be hit with a boatload of health information.
Turmeric is best known for its use in traditional Indian cuisine, but these days, it can be found far beyond the dish.
Tumeric is said to contain the following properties: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, as well as research stating that it may prevent Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis. The root is also said to rival the effectiveness of pharmaceuticals in treating cancers, specifically colon, breast, esophagus, oral cavity, prostate and liver.
Not only is turmeric increasingly popular in the wellness world, it’s also gaining traction among outdoor enthusiasts.
Most notably, pro surfer and self-professed health nut Laird Hamilton has touted the positive effects of turmeric root in multiple interviews. Talking to Men’s Journal, Hamilton chatted about his daily habit of juicing the root and having a full glass after lunch, calling it “a miracle drink.”
With any food and supplement, there are certainly a set of “best practices” that come with ingesting them.
